Meet Melissa McNab, one of Nutshell's no-code experts

No-code builder

Melissa is a freelance no-code builder at Nutshell Apps, a trusted no code mobile app development platform that empowers anyone within a business to create and distribute mobile apps. She’s also a Design Director at Code-operative, a non-profit worker led co-operative of freelancers who’s aim is to build tech for good.

Mel first joined Nutshell Apps on a month’s work experience whilst studying for her masters degree at Northumbria University. She later progressed into UX/UI and general design after graduating. 3 years later, she’s back working at Nutshell as a no-code expert by working with clients on building and designing their mobile apps on the Nutshell platform.

As someone who has never been a big fan of the normal 9-5 working pattern, Melissa is grateful that Nutshell gives her the flexibility to work freelance with clients building no-code apps, and also continue working on her own business as the Design Director.

We spoke to Melissa about her journey so far working in no-code, her thoughts on Nutshell Apps as a no-code platform, and top tips for getting into the low-code/no-code industry.

Q: “What inspired you to pursue a career in the tech/no-code industry?”

A: Growing up I was always involved in STEM subjects and I often was the only girl in those classes but I’ve never found that I haven’t fit in within those types of environments. My parents taught me to follow what I love to do and not conform to stereotypes, and they enabled that in every possible way. One of my first opportunities working in no-code was with WordPress, a really powerful no-code tool. I decided to make the move to Nutshell Apps because I really believe in the product and I think it has a massive potential for growth in the next few years. I love working in no-code and within the tech industry, and while it can be quite challenging, I feel lucky to work in a very rewarding and encouraging environment at Nutshell.

Q: “What do you enjoy most about working at Nutshell?”

A: I love the process, going from ideas to final product. There’s nothing more satisfying to see an idea that was on paper become a physical product that functions and looks great. Back in May I was brought into a project for a UX rescope as the users needs had changed, since it was first built. I worked with the client to rescope the requirements, build out the UX flow and update the user interface design. As a result, I delivered a new app with all the correct requirements, which they loved and that brought me a lot of satisfaction.

I really love that Nutshell are amazing at enabling your passions, I’ve seen multiple people within the company go to someone and say ‘I’d really love to also be able to do this’ and Nutshell have made that happen. They also take on a lot of apprenticeships, allowing people to build up from the bottom.

Q: “What’s your thoughts on the above statement, and does it reflect Nutshell Apps?”

A: After reading this statement, I’m definitely shocked and it makes me feel a sense of responsibility to represent women in the no-code industry. Luckily, it doesn’t reflect Nutshell Apps, as I’ve never felt like my gender makes me less capable of taking on opportunities. It’s great to see that they’re also very enabling and respectful towards shaping employees passions and helping them grow within the company. I would definitely recommend Nutshell as an inclusive place to work.

Q: “Do you have any tips for other women looking to start their own business within the tech industry?”

A: Honestly, I’ve never been a big fan of the normal 9-5. Outside of Nutshell, I work with a bunch of tech co-operatives, one of which I’m the director of and it gives me the flexibility that I want, whilst also working with so many lovely like-minded people. For those of you wonderful women who are looking to start your own business, I say absolutely do it! Also, get in contact with other business owners. There’s empowerment in sharing and I can guarantee that there’s more than a few ‘someone’s’ out there willing to help you to do it.
