The future of UK Rail is mobile

As the sector embarks on the biggest technological shake-up since the industrial revolution, there’s only one question you need to ask

Will you be ready?

Planning 4 Delivery is a safety improvement programme designed to reduce close-calls and near-misses,  preventing accidents and fatalities on the railway. It is the biggest transformation in a generation, and will affect every company that provides operational services into the UK rail infrastructure.

In short, Network Rail are going paperless. This means big changes to the existing track access and Safe System Of Work planning processes, including the replacement of its own outdated SSOWP system with a next-generation mobile solution in early 2021.

So what does this mean for you? To be competitive and to secure your standing in the supply chain, you will need to go mobile too… and soon. But don’t fret – you’re in the right place.

The old days of lever-arch files and illegible handwriting are numbered. It’s estimated that over the next five years more than 100,000 mobile apps will need to be created for the rail industry alone.

We are the new standard

In association with OnTrac, the UK’s leading software solutions partner to the rail industry, Nutshell is at the forefront of this revolutionary digital transformation initiative, providing the mobile capability behind a suite of groundbreaking apps at it’s core.

Rail Hub is OnTrac’s fully-digital end-to-end solution based on the 019 Standard and is already used by most of the Network Rail supply chain to manage and report on the Safe System Of Work planning process to the very latest compliance standards.

The reasons to invest in Rail Hub are obvious: it saves time (reducing a two hour process to less than 10 minutes), it saves money (pays for itself within 2-3 months on paper costs alone) and more importantly, it saves lives (over a million safe work packs created every year, and not a single life lost).

The most comprehensive and up-to-date risk register in the UK, delivering more than 16,000 track-miles of geo-tagged data to more than 12,000 engineers.

A new era is coming

In 2021, Network Rail will roll-out the next generation of Rail Hub as part of the P4D Programme, taking the UK’s rail access planning processes 100% digital and making photocopies, wet signatures and preventable accidents a thing of the past.

In collaboration with Ernst & Young, OnTrac are already taking advantage of Nutshell’s no-code application development platform to deliver the rapid expansion of Rail Hub utilities to a workforce of more than 45,000 track-side engineers across 600+ companies.

And they’re not alone

Nutshell is trusted by rail industry giants such as Siemens, Murphy and Systra to name a few, building and deploying sophisticated track-side mobile apps to their field engineers faster than ever before.

Isolation and uncertainty
