Why is manual HAVS tracking a problem?
HAVS recording prevents Vibration White Finger, which is a long-term condition that can result from prolonged use of vibrating tools. However, sometimes it is not recorded at all, as workers don’t think it’s a priority.
A looming threat
Over 2 million people are at risk of developing whitefinger at any time, and there is over 300,000 advanced cases in the UK alone.
Held accountable years later
While not tracking HAVS correctly might not seem a big problem in the moment, you can be sued years after the fact when workers develop white finger (9% of all employer liability cases)
No audit trail
Without an audit trail, accountability is non-existent. Without transparent and enforceable procedures, or the explicit hand-over and acceptance of responsibility, it is impossible to ensure compliance and provide sufficient evidence at audit.
It is difficult to measure time on a machine in the heat of the moment, and workers may give their safety a backseat in order to complete work on time.
Non compliance leads to fines, NCRs, being taken to court, and losing out on work by being struck off the supplier list.
As with any paper form, completed HAVS forms can be lost or damaged, which leads to non compliance and legal action.

Better reporting means fewer fines and NCRs
Bad data from missing, rushed and incomplete reports is one of the top causes of fines and NCRs. This is exacerbated further by clumsy administration; copying and pasting safety-critical data from WhatsApp is not good practice for data handling, and inevitably leads to human error.
With 7,075 notices issued by HSE in 2019/20 alone and £35.8 million issued in fines, an inefficient reporting process is a very efficient way to bankrupt your project.
